ANC applauds the Government of Canada's ongoing support for active transportation
On April 11th, the Government of Canada announced $10.5 million of funding over three years (2017 to 2020) for seven projects to promote healthier lifestyles among young Canadians and their families. The Montréal Urban Ecology Centre, the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation and Sustainable Calgary are thrilled by this announcement which allows the implementation of the third phase of the project Active Neighbourhoods Canada / Réseau Quartiers verts project to continue the work of building the active city.
Much has been accomplished in the first year of Phase 3. The launch of the platform participatoryplanning.ca allows free access to an online toolbox to build green, active and healthy neighborhoods together. And of course, we continue to work in the field with three communities: Saguenay (QC), Peterborough (ON) and Acadia (AB). For example, in Peterborough this year, we have engaged over 350 residents of the Jackson Park Brookdale neighbourhood in developing a diagnostic portrait of their neighbourhood, and are beginning to create shared visions for enhanced public space.
Through this funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), we will continue to develop the practice of participatory urban planning through fieldwork and knowledge transfer. We will also strive to facilitate changes in practices and policies Canada-wide towards the goal of green, active, and healthy neighbourhoods.
